The club is sad to announce the death of ROY KENT a long standing member of TRFC. He played in the 1st XV in the 50s and other sides in the 60s. His scrum cap was donated to the club.
He was still a TRFC man at heart and enjoyed attending the VP lunches, right up to last season.
His party piece was "The Muffin Man" which could empty any club in seconds. He was infamous!
His funeral to be announced.

For the second year in a row Thurrock men won the Essex Charity 7s tournament which was held at Romford rugby club. Thurrock were in a tough pool for the first round of games but came trough as group winners after defeating Maldon 45-5, Eton Manor 26-0 and Harpenden 26-19. Thurrock then moved into the semi final were they met a strong London Lithuania team but they came out on top with a 19-0 victory. Moving into the final and with two players now injured it looked like a very tall order for the very young team. They would be facing the undefeated Westcliff side that looked very well drilled. The game started with Thurrock on fire running in tries from there own half, at half time the score was 21-0 in Thurrock's favour and coach David Mobbs-Smith asked for the same intensity in the second half. After some fantastic defensive work Thurrock were too strong for the Westcliff side and came out 47-5 winners in the final. This was a very young and exiting group of players and this again showed that Thurrock have some very useful players coming through the system. Captain James Flavin lead from the front all day and guided his side to the trophy and qualification to the Allianz park finals. Thurrock will now be playing at Saracens home ground (Allianz park) on the 8th August were they will be playing the winners of other tournaments from around the country. At the next stage the Thurrock men have the chance of winning £1000 prize money but will be playing some very strong teams. The Thurrock team would like to thank the supporters for turning out and cheering them on all day! The '8th' man really did help them lift this trophy!

Dear members,
We would like to invite you to our 'coffee with the coaches' night on the 16th July. It will be from 6.30pm - 7.30pm. We started this last season and it was a success, it gives members the chance to question the DOR, youth DOR and coaches on anything rugby related. This year will be slightly different, we will be in the small bar and the coaches can answer any questions directly (one to one) rather than just sitting behind a table. So feel free to come along anytime between 6.30pm - 7.30pm and have a chat, give us your views, ask questions and give us ideas on how to improve things at the club!
We look forward to seeing you on the 16th July.

Thurrock RFC are very pleased to announce that one of our youth coaches has won the ‘QBE my coach competition’. This is a national award and is only awarded to four people in the country. Dean Bennett who is the under 15’s coach at Thurrock RFC won the award for his efforts and time dedication to the club. Dean was nominated by Dave Graham and Chris Sullivan at the club for his unbelievable commitment and drive to succeed.
His, and his reflected,
"Enthusiasm" has helped gel his team, coaches, parents and administrators
into a unit which will achieve.
Like so many Youth Coaches he came into that side of the game because of his
son, a boy who, by merit, is now included within Thurrock Rugby Football Club
Youth Academy, a group comprising of any invited boy between the age of 13 and
17 years of age.
At the start of season 2013 / 14 Dean, for no reason of his own making, found
himself with a core of 8 - 10 players and a commitment to Essex Youth League
rugby.
He ran a good Pre-season regime whilst also watching and listening to other
coaches to widen his own knowledge, a trait he fully utilised constantly. Why
re-invent the wheel? He completed requisite training modules but was still
having no greater attendance at his twice weekly sessions.
As the season kicked off Dean realised he would be unable to fulfil his League
responsibilities so appropriate authorities were informed.
This left him with two thirds of a team to play any developmental fixtures his
administrator could arrange. They managed one meaningful game all season!!
A lesser coach would perhaps have retired to 'pipe and slippers' but the
ex-Royal Engineer went from "failure to failure" maintaining the
respect of his core of players and adding, gradually, to it by press adverts;
word of mouth; coercion or any other tool which worked.
By the start of season 2014 / 15 he and his team had doubled his squad numbers
for TRFC U15 Youth!! They’re - entered the League in the lowest Division.
At the time of this submission they lie second in their Division and
considering all permutations could finish anywhere in the top three by close of
season.
As part of their QBE Coaching Club programme, QBE Insurance will provide Dean with a free place on an RFU Level 2 coaching course for him to further his coaching skills. Dean and his team will also receive a visit from a legendary rugby personality to Thurrock rugby club who will take a coaching session alongside Dean at the club.
Dean
Congratulations from everyone at Thurrock Rugby Club on your well earned reward.
It proves that perseverance and enthusiasm bring their own rewards.
I'm positive the whole squad, including parents, are proud of your achievement.
Again well done and thanks.

Captained by T-Bird India Harvey who recently starred at England's divisional program, the ThunderBirds beat Lewes, Southhampton and Beckenham in their group amassing 107 points in the process, then after beating Richmond in the semifinals they played "Scotty little soldiers" in the final who are an Army charity team who support children. Having lost to the same opposition in last years tournament, ThunderBirds had a score to settle and with a team picked from Essex, Sheffield, Kent and a couple of Maltese internationals they triumphed 17-10!!!
ThunderBirds have been invited to various summer tournaments as well as the world class Dubai Classic and require further support to raise as much money as they can for BreakThroughBreastCancer, Companies or individuals can contact: dor@thurrockrfc.com

This programme runs for 6 weeks and this year we will be holding an 'end of touch BBQ' on the last session. Everyone is invited to stay behind after and enjoy some food and drink.
A massive thank you to Dave Harries who is running this event and to the referees that are giving there time up.

Thurrock RFC are looking for rooms to rent in the local area. We will be having some players arriving around August/September time and it will be for a period of 6 months. We have men and women arriving and help is needed to put them up. We can discus rates once we have people/rooms lined up.
These players are on an international rugby programme, we don't have any problems with them and if we did they would be removed straight away. They are checked on by the South African union and weekly updates are sent about them. These players are professional rugby players with a professional attitude.

Keeping in line with the clubs commitment to bringing youth players into our senior set-up, I thought I would share with you some facts about this weeks 1st team. The 1s ran out on Saturday with an average age of just 23. Thirteen of the match day eighteen were under the age of 25 and this included four 18 year olds. Yes this season has been a tough one but the experience these players are gaining is really going to benefit the club in the long run. Long may this continue and congratulations must go to our youth set-up for producing these players.
One last thing: Our senior head coach David Mobbs-Smith has been announced as the Sweden National coach for 7s. A huge congratulations to Mobbsy from TRFC, you maybe seeing some blond players next season too ;-)

I wish all the youth players the best of luck. These will be the first players that will be produced through our new academy and this is such an important move for the club. We are trying to guarantee that the future players of this club are fully prepare for senior rugby and have a better understanding of the game.
The club is starting to look very professional behind the scenes and this is a very exiciting time for us all. Please keep supporting your club!

On Sunday September 21st, Thurrock Rugby Club was visited by representatives of the England and Essex RFUs who brought with them a delegation from the Georgian Rugby Federation. The visit was to show the way that an English rugby club with a rugby academy is set up and the work involved in making it a success. It was an honour for Thurrock to be chosen as one of the participants in this reciprocal visit between the RFU and the Georgian RFU, which shows the high regard that TRFC is held in. The afternoon was a great success where the visitors witnessed practical skills and coaching techniques, before enjoying a buffet and further discussions.

Harry Bennett (aka Harry the Post, aka H) has been a fixture in the "new" club for many years. His spot in the corner of the lounge bar will forever be Harry's perch. he discovered the club when he covered the postal round of a colleague who was off on the sick. He knew Roy Burt, who was bar manager at the time, and became a member ever since. For many years he was the man who cleaned the pipes.
His funeral will take place on Wednesday May 7th, leaving from the club at 1.15ish, to reach the Crematorium by 2 p.m. and then returning to the club after.
He will be sadly missed as one of the club's most loyal members.
Just a reminder email about the events we have in the next few weeks

A New Journey
My 1st week at Thurrock Rugby Football Club completed, I now feel very much at home. The 1st team at home to Basingstoke on Saturday and then an exciting game watching the U16s take on Saracens. The impression I've got is that Thurrock could be a place that some people in these modern times might describe as a good old fashioned rugby club. That is only partially true, because strong values based on community participation and local involvement coupled to a wonderful pride in their club might be traits from times past, but there is much more to the Oakfield set up. Maybe it's the drive along the full length of Long Lane that makes you feel like you are visiting someone at home, but I believe it's the people that you meet there. Strong handshakes, warm smiles and good luck wishes abound.
I am very fortunate to be given this opportunity and hope my philosophy on how rugby is coached and played will help to enrich all that come into contact with me and that performances on the pitch are both entertaining and successful.

The club wishes them well in the future as they both commit to different areas in their life. JD will be focusing on the T-Birds and preparing Mercedes for the rugby world cup while Butch has been given a promotion at work that will now get his full attention!

I would like to introduce David Mobbs -Smith as the new 1st team Head coach. Below is a small write up of David as a coach. He will be joined by Frankie Neal and Ali Makenzie in the new look coaching setup.
David has coached rugby at Saracens and has worked with Middlesex on developing County players. He has also been involved in after school rugby clubs and in coaching school teams. David has real expertise at working with players of all ages and abilities and whilst being passionate about rugby has a warm and engaging style that players relate to. David is a level 3 RFU coach.
David grew up in South Africa, a country of huge rugby intensity, and developed into a skilled player playing at U21 for the Durban Combined Forces team. He additionally attained South African Provincial colours in both volleyball and swimming.
He has an individual approach to the development of players believing the game should be played with passion, flair, pace, comradeship and be exciting to all participants. That philosophy is carried into his approach on how the core skills of the game are taught to all levels of players including fitness and sports psychology. “Rugby although gladiatorial is a game played by and between kindred spirits.” says David
Below is a list of coaching jobs that David has been involved with over the last few years:
· General Manager and Head of Academy

England
Women’s Elite Player squad (EPS) for the 2013/14 campaign has been announced,
with 11 new faces included in an extended group of 50. Thurrock hooker Mercedes Foy has been included
after impressing during this summer’s Nations Cup, while Thurrock fly half
Emily Scott, who made her England debut in last season’s Six Nations campaign,
makes the natural step up to the EPS. The third T-Bird is Rachael Burford, who is an
established member of the EPS.
The
England squads will compete in another rigorous and competitive international
programme this season. The XVs will be involved in an Autumn International
Series in November (details of which will be confirmed shortly) followed by the
Six Nations Championship in the New Year. These two series will be invaluable
preparation for the 2014 Rugby World Cup, which takes place in France next
August.
England
Head Coach Gary Street said: “This season we have selected a squad of 50
players for our EPS. This is because of the challenge a World Cup year brings,
as well as being one of eight teams selected for every Sevens World Series
events.
In
addition to the EPS, an England World Cup training squad will also be selected
from the EPS in November to support preparations for the competition.
Everyone at the
club wishes them every success at this exciting time in their rugby careers.

Dear member
My name is Louise and I’m currently working on a new prime time Channel 4 cooking series called ‘The Taste’. I thought this might be of interest to some your members that may harbour great cooking skills, whether they follow it as a hobby or just have a natural talent when cooking for themselves or families.
The show is a national culinary contest that puts taste at the forefront of the show. We’re looking for people who would like to put their skills to the test by preparing dishes that will wow and impress our panel of internationally renowned food experts; Nigella Lawson, Anthony Bourdain and Ludo Lefebvre.
I’ve attached a flyer for the show. It would be amazing if you could put this up in the club for your staff and members to see. Alternatively if you or anyone you know are interested in applying you can follow the link to our online application form:

Dear club members,
I have now been in post for around two months and a lot has happened! I thought that I would give you (the members) a quick update of what is happening at the club and what we want to achieve.
The committee asked me to provide them with my ‘vision’ before I was appointed the clubs director of rugby and I wanted to share this with you so that you have a better understanding of what I want for our club. Below is the ‘vision’ that I sent to the committee:
My vision for the Director of Rugby post is to provide executive analysis to the coaches, players and leadership teams in all areas of the club.
I will look at the club as a whole and look to develop within as well as adding to the squads where needed. We will be a club with a cause and I'll be encouraging our players to play with no fear - there should be no ceilings to achievement and ambition for any of our players in any team.
Focus must be put onto our youth section and all coaches must understand the way its first team plays rugby and the reason for playing that type of game. Focus must also be on recruitment of quality players in positions that are needed and these players must fit into the club's way of thinking and playing.
Below are some areas which will help us in achieving our goals/targets:
· The whole club working together
· Total understanding of people's roles within the club
· Clear understanding of club's vision
· Open honest discussions from top down
· Clear selection policy
· In-house coaching
· Specific outside coaching
· Clear budgeting
· Link with local schools and clubs
· Set up a local rugby academy
The overall vision of the club:
To be a successful, sustainable rugby club with strong community links, playing a brand of rugby to be proud of and having a relentless drive to producing high quality rugby players at the top level.
Since my appointment we have set up a rugby committee that is led by myself; this committee now deals with all rugby matters within the club. This committee reports back to the general committee once a month and has had a very busy start to the season. Below you will see a list of some of the work already carried out by the rugby committee:
· A new youth DOR put in place
· The first summer touch tournament took place
· Meetings with all senior coaches/management
· Youth/mini section meeting held
· Links with Essex county
· New rugby academy set up with Palmers college (start date Sep 2014)
· First ‘all youth’ session took place (front row clinic)
· Essex county to coach in OUR local schools
· Essex trials, games and meetings to be held at the club
· Weightlifting coach now in place
From the list above you can see that we have been very much ‘Club’ focused and this will be the same all season. The only way this club can be successful is if we are all working together. You will start to see the phrase ‘ONE CLUB’ used around the club this season and we would like you all to buy into this.
A full list of coaches/managers and committees will be sent out soon, we shall also be working to get a ‘who’s who’ board up in the club; again this will help with communication.
We shall be using our website as a ‘tool’ to contact all members so please keep up-to-date with what is happening at the club.
One last thing: I would like to thank everyone for their support of our great club and all the time that you put in. We would not be the club we are if we didn’t have the members, parents, coaches, committees, ground staff, supporters, medical team and of course the players. If you have any questions about the club and what is happening then please feel free to get in contact with me.
Many Thanks.

Director of rugby Thurrock RFC
It has been a tour of opportunity but tomorrow is all about winning. Hopefully we will both be involved on the pitch. It has been an amazing experience.
The team run was great this afternoon.
I've had a great birthday too. Certainly one to remember with the shirt presentation tonight.

Both girls are starting on the bench on Tuesday 30th against Canada
On Thursday July 25th family, friends and supporters gathered at Thurrock Rugby Club to wish Bon Voyage to Mercedes Foy and Emily Scott, who have since flown out to Denver, Colorado to represent England in a four nation competition. The other teams are USA, Canada, and South Africa.
About 100 people celebrated this great honour at the clubhouse with drinks and a buffet. Brian Howells, President, wished the girls well on behalf of the club. He also praised the members for their continued support, but said that most of the praise must go to the girls’ families for all the help and support they have given from an early age. He said, “How many parents would say to two beautiful girls ‘You go and play that rough game of rugby! We are with you all the way.’”
Mercedes Foy, Captain of the T-Birds, spoke on behalf of both the girls and said they were Thurrock girls who had both begun playing rugby in Thurrock, she at TRFC and Emily at Stanford RFC. They were very proud to represent the club, Thurrock and England.
Thurrock Rugby Club have had a few of their
players representing England and Great Britain during the last month.
Rachael Burford of the T-Birds, was selected for England in the three test matches against World Champions New Zealand in New Zealand, while Earl Gorman, first XV player, was selected to play for Great Britain Police in a 4 nation tournament in West Yorkshire. After training at Bradford Bulls, Earl went on to score a try against Australia, who eventually won the tournament. Unfortunately New Zealand pulled out of the competition. Here is Earl in action against Fiji.

3 T-BIRDS TO PLAY FOR ENGLAND
Three T-Birds of Thurrock Rugby Club have been called up to play for England this summer. Mercedes Foy (Captain of the T-Birds) will go to the USA in July together with Emily Scott; Rachael Burford and Emily Scott are in Amsterdam for the IRB World Series 7s this weekend (May 18th); and Rachael Burford will travel to New Zealand for test matches against the Kiwis later in the year – the first time ever that an England team has travelled there. Rachael and Emily are also likely to go to Moscow for the World Cup 7s in June.
Mercedes will fly to Denver, Colorado on July 26th, said to be the heart of rugby in America. There England will play USA, Canada, South Africa and France in The Nations Cup.
Mercedes Foy spoke of her weekends training with the England squad at the University Sports Park in Guildford, where Harlequins also train. To get there she was chosen for Essex, then London and South East (where she was made Captain) and then The Super Twos, the last leg before a full trial with the England squad, when the teams are picked for the summer tours. She said “This has been a long, hard road; it has been gruelling physically, mentally and emotionally. But it is such an honour to know I’m going to represent my country. However, now the real hard work starts.
“I’d like to thank Thurrock Rugby Club for all the support they’ve given us. I started at the club when I was 16 and can never see myself playing anywhere else and T-Birds are the best group of girls you could ever play with. T-Birds forever!”
President of Thurrock Rugby Club, Brian Howells, said, “The girls deserve this success after their determination and efforts throughout the year. We hope their tours go well and they enjoy the experience. It is a great honour for the club.”
Mercedes Foy, Captain of the T-Birds has been selected to travel with the England Squad to the USA on their summer tour.
This a thoroughly deserved award for Mercedes and the T-Birds for all their total commitment to TRFC and the cause of women's rugby.
Congratulations from everyone.

Head Coach, Dean White said "This shows that we mean business in the Premiership and are not there just to make up the numbers".
On Wednesday 25th July, representatives of the A-Team attended the Zoo Shield awards at the East India Club in London. Mike Dunk (A-Team Manager), Dan Bowden (Coach) and Sam Porter (A-Team Captain) picked up an award for finishing top of the Zoo Shield League 3N in their innaugural season.
The presentations were made by former All Blacks captain and World Cup Winner, Sean Fitzpatrick.
The season of 2012 has been such a monumental season for Thurrock RFC. The club is calling it the ‘Golden Season’ after the success on and off the field that can only be compared to the Essex Cup domination in the 70’s and early 90’s when beating London Irish. The difference this time is that the success has been throughout the whole season across the men, ladies and youth section.
The 1st XV team have been coached for the past four years by Jamie Daisley and Michael Wilkins and managed by Kevin Hymas. They have secured 2 promotions in 4 seasons with a team of young local boys. Both Jamie and Butch work energetically coaching all the senior players on a Tuesday and Thursday night. Jamie coaches the T-birds and T-Chicks while Butch coaches the U16’s. The work that they have put in over the past four years have been inspirational in transforming the club’s ambitions, bringing back local players to the club along with developing the players abilities and skills to the quality it is now. Their forward thinking desires are going to send to club further upwards and putting Thurrock Rugby back on the map.
This 1st team were convincing winners of London One North and taking the club back into the National Leagues. Looking back at certain games when the rub of the green went your way sums up what can only be called an outstanding effort. The main turning points that spring to mind, was the last kick of the match by Michael Stanley to secure a draw at Bury St Edmunds, a disallowed Rochford try that meant a close fought 2 point win, and the introduction of Earl Gorman at Diss with time running out he made 2 last ditch breaks that created 2 match winning tries after trailing 3-0 for most of the game.
After a euphoric 1st home game in beating Ruislip the world of Thurrock came crashing down with an early defeat at Brentwood, in hindsight it probably was the best thing, the new side with 6 new players recruited over the summer did not quite gel together and soon realised it was more than just turning up, there was plenty of hard work still to be done.
Thurrock’s home form and support with over 400 people regularly was fantastic and they kept coming back for more as they only failed to score 40 points or more on 3 occasions, when they defeated their closest rivals Colchester 36-13, Letchworth 25-3 (on remembrance weekend when you cannot forget Rolf Jones and his hairs on the neck standing-up rendition of the last post), and Bury St Edmunds 27-15, it meant 13 home league games all unbeaten.
It was however the early away form that was under scrutiny but still returned with 11 wins the draw and the defeat that were mentioned earlier.
Undoubtedly the summer signing of Michael Stanley was the catalyst to this success, along with new signing’s of Reece Durrance, Aston Bevans-Royston, Josh Cook and Sam Boshell, and then another key moment was the signing of England Counties Full Back Frankie Neale just before the Brentwood game giving extra dimension and impetus to the season. Michael Stanley was top try scorer with 28 tries adding to his place kicking in the first 13 games kicking 139 points to make a total of 279 points. Neale’s arrival meant he took over the kicking duties and scored 143 points plus 8 tries so he totalled 183 points in his 13 matches. Other top try scorers were wingers Nat Farrell (16), Sam Boshell (14), Ben Stanley and No8 Bradleigh Retigan both with 12
Thurrock also went through the season fortunate on the injury front, a broken thumb meant an 8 week break for Reece Durrance, and damaged shoulder’s to Bevans-Royston and captain Darryl Worster see the prop out for 5 weeks, but the unfortunate Worster damaged his shoulder at Braintree, he made his comeback in early March but he lasted less than 10 minutes and his season was over. Another factor was the re-emergence of back row Charlie Russo after a couple of seasons not playing he come back to summer training and forced his way back into the frame from Christmas onwards
Michael Stanley was voted players player by his team mates, probably an easy decision.
The players and the management team would like to thank the Club Supporters and Sponsors, without you all we would not be able reach our achievements this season on the field of play, they all go hand in hand so you can’t have one without the other, we now look forward to life next season in a new league with new challenges, come this September, will we be ready, you bet we will.
Ralph Henderson MBE, our newly appointed Director of Rugby set himself and the club some big ambitions and targets for last season, which we came very close to achieving all.
The development team under the guidance and coaching of Dan Bowden and Mike Dunk won their league with player’s player being Ben Madden. The 3rd team under the management of Dave Towler also won their league and reached the BL finals day, with a team of the Thurrock future along with some old heads. The 4th team managed for many years by Kevin Wakeford and Clive Burgess, still remain the heart and soul of the club with their fancy dress themes every Saturday under the orders of their player’s player Steve Bridger. They ended up losing in the BL Merit Finals day.
Most recently our Colts were victorious winners of the Essex Cup Final beating Chingford 12-11 in a thrilling game. Andy Stanford, Director of Rugby for the youth and Chris Sullivan have worked tirelessly with the boys since a young age to achieve this coveted title before many step into senior rugby or university life. The team is made up with all local Thurrock boys many of whom have played 1st team and senior rugby this season. Andrew Nimmo voted 3rd team players player along with players like Mark Sullivan, Alex Jones, Joss Nunn and Reece Millar are names you will be seeing more in the future of our booming senior section.
Our ladies team the T-Birds have encrypted their name in the history books after an epic season that no one could have dreamed of. After only securing promotion last season into the second tier of women’s rugby the Championship, they won the league and play off to be promoted into the dizzy heights of Premiership rugby for next season. The formation of the Thurrock T-birds under Gavin Scott and Debbie Gay some 15-20 years ago began with a bunch of Rugby wives, girlfriends and mums. Coach Dean White has been involved with the team since the start, with the addition of coaches Jamie Daisley and Chris Emerson have secured the T-Birds a record of 4 League Titles and 3 promotions in 7 seasons. Last year the T-Birds were honoured with one of 15 RFU Presidents National awards for Girl Power, after their success of developing women’s rugby across the county and formation of the T-Chicks U15 and Under 18 girl’s teams. The support the girls get on a Sunday afternoon reaches over 200 that no other team in the country has. The T-Birds are made up of a number of local girls who have been with the team for a number of years including Captain Mercedes Foy, Katie Fenn, Joanne Convoy, Tammy Nicholls and Laura Cavanagh. The addition of Emily Scott, current England U20’s and England Sevens Star along with India Harvey, England U18’s strengthened the team to a force to be reckoned with in women’s rugby being one of the top 8 teams in the country. Oakfield is our fortress having lost just once at home in the last 5 seasons. Thurrock rugby club youth and mini section have a thriving positive approach to rugby. We currently have twenty nine coaches who all follow the club ethos which is developing the children through the game into team players with a positive attitude which will place them in good stead for their future. With children as young as five years old learning the game through fun progressing through the age groups up to eighteen and hopefully then into our senior sides. This year our section has competed at the highest level with three of our age groups U14, U16 and Colts progressing into the Essex cup finals which is a great achievement. The section increases each year and it is great to see all the children enjoying their sunday mornings. The parents support of their children is second to none applauding not only our children but the visiting teams and that is what rugby is all about. Chairman Ken Laybourne, Ali and Andy Stanford and Christine Jones work hard behind the scenes along with all of the coaches and administrators whose work never ends to develop and instill the values of rugby in Thurrock in shaping the future of the club. Schools links with schools such as William Edwards are forever strengthening with a number of players from the ladies and men coaching in schools such as William Edwards, Gateway and Gable Hall with more to come next year. The success on the field has been matched by the dedication and commitment of the backroom personnel on the main committee, sponsorship and social committee. Brain Howells club President celebrates 50 years in the club next season. Bob Heapy Chairman, Club treasurer Jeff Selway and Secretary Mike Stephenson work diligently to keep the club in order. While Jane Burroughs and her bar team keep the drink flowing and club busy throughout the year. Jason Bedding Vice Chairman is constantly working hard in improving club facilities with the new addition of an outside bar and catering facilities ready for next season. The ground staff work all year round to keep our pitches quality like you see on TV. The volunteers of the club are irreplaceable with special mentions to Carol Fahey and Paddy Holbrook who step down from over 30 years of service in the kitchen and looking after the welfare of the players. Colin Rate heads the clubs Business Committee involving a number of local companies and ex players such as Trevor Burge, Doc Leckenby, Austin Fitzmaurice, Martin Fahey and Peter Worsfold in moving the club forward. Mercedes Foy and the social committee of people like Mark Burroughs have raised thousands for the club and numerous charities this year. This was recognized by winning a second consecutive RFU President 15 award for the club’s fundraising efforts this season. The club has raised over £4000 for Breakthrough Breast Cancer along with another £6000 towards numerous charities such as the Air Ambulance, St Lukes and Little Havens. The last game of the season this year see a visit from the RFU President Willie Wildash who was overwhelmed by the support and hard work of the club and commented on how well we demonstrate the values of rugby in all we do and are a real example to other clubs across the country. Mayor Charlie Curtis and a number of other local dignitaries were present on this day to witness the club’s successful attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the World’s Largest Scrum which was achieved smashing the previous record of 245 with 586 men, women and children from the whole community. There are a number of events coming up in the closed season to keep the club busy including a Diamond Jubilee Celebration on Sat 2nd June £10 adults, £5 kids with a band, disco and unlimited use of all the inflatable’s and fairground rides There is a mixed Touch rugby tournament for all on Saturday 23rd June also. If anyone is interested in attending they should contact Mercedes on 01375374877. This certainly has been an unforgettable season to go down in history and would not be possible without the clubs many sponsors including LMG, Wrightsure, The Ship, White Hart, Doyle Clayton and Rates to name a few. The support from the Enquirer, Your Thurrock and Gazette is helping to promote the club across the borough and further afield. We are already planning for next year on and off the field and strive to achieve more success for our club members and local community. Thurrock Rugby Club is a unique, special community club that is moving forward. Get behind them in any way you can. If you are interested in being involved with the club whether playing or socializing, sponsoring or volunteering then contact the rugby club on 01375 374877.

We would like to give our best wishes to the players, old and new, coaches and DOR a succesful year. The new squad has a number of Colts players who have been given an opportunity and a thanks go out to Andy Stanford and Chris Sullivan for there hard work prepairing these players.

This will be to discuss the new season and a questions and answers session.
All are welcome
This Monday 21st May at the Baptist Church Hall in Premier Ave. at 7.30 p.m.Grays Athletic have a meeting with The Stifford Community Forum to discuss their plans for the development of a new football stadium in the area.
If their plans are accepted by the council it could possibly see the end of mini's and junior rugby for the club. The plans that they are submitting have a stadium, 4 full size football pitches, 2 x 7 a side football pitches, 7 x 5 a side football pitches, a hockey pitch 3 netball pitches and a clubhouse as well as parking for 580 cars.
Nowhere in their plans are there any mini or junior rugby pitches. Obviously they cannot encroach on our land (which is the 3 main pitches outside of our hall), but they seem to want all the rest of the land around us.
If you want to have your say in protecting our space for the mini's and juniors get to this meeting

Thurrocks
under 13s have Judo training
Thursday evening the under 13s team traded a rugby
session for a Judo session at J.S.C. Judo Club Purfleet. J.S.C. Judo was
founded in 1989 by John and Sharon Cottis and has produced some of the best in
Great Britain also national and international champions.
Over the years J.S.C. Judo has produced Olympians,
World and European medallists such as Peter Cousins, Thomas Cousins, Vicki Dunn
and Cheryle Peel the list goes on not to mention numerous national junior and
senior medallists. Not only producing future stars in this field they also give
advice and techniques to help Rugby clubs/ players improve their game in
methods and fitness.J.S.C. Judo gives advice and training not only to local
teams but have links to Bath RFC also.
Thurrocks under 13s were put through their paces
and it was a big eye opener in fitness levels in the team and discipline. The
boys were welcomed to a friendly environment and settled into the training with
great enthusiasm and a willing to learn something new that they could use on
the field (legally).
The boys were given tips on how to grapple and hold
on properly, how to bring someone to the ground more effectively and to fall
without hurting yourself and most importantly a lesson in fitness and doing the
best they can to their abilities.
The team benefited from it greatly and Im sure
there will be more sessions to come. Wouldnt be a bad thing for our other
teams, all age groups to give it a go as they train kids from 5 to adults.
If youre a coach that is interested in including
some extra skills in your team or a player that could do with bigger bag of
tricks and improve your fitness give J.S.C Judo a visit and see for yourself.

In partnership with QBE, the specialist in business insurance, the fifth year of the Presidents XV Awards scheme has again delivered a rich variety of projects and ideas, aimed at promoting and developing the game across the full width of the rugby community.
Im very proud that the Presidents XV Awards, supported by QBE, have uncovered and honoured clubs who are doing such good work, says RFU President Richard Appleby: The RFU has been supporting a range of projects in inner cities and areas of social deprivation for many years and there has been a steady increase in support for people with Learning Difficulties in recent times.
Rugby Union has always been a game in which anyone and everyone has an open invitation to take part and it is the army of volunteers who make up the rugby family which makes it available.
As the Presidents XV winners underline, it is not only a group of people with great resource and imagination, but also with a broad caring streak. Im delighted to see that trait being recognised.
Steven Burns, CEO of QBE European Operations said: As the Official Insurance Partner of the RFU, we are committed to supporting rugby at all levels. The awards put the spotlight on the dedication, creativity and resourcefulness of volunteers across the game. It is especially pleasing to see that winning clubs have used rugby to help individuals overcome the difficulties they face and can showcase their good work through the Presidents XV Awards.
The winning clubs will all receive a cheque for 500 and a Presidents XV Trophy, while the 30 runners-up will all collect a cheque for 100. This year 274 entries were received in the competition.
The judging panel, who will also make the trophy presentations at the winning clubs, comprised RFU President Richard Appleby, Immediate Past President John Owen, Vice-Presidents Willie Wildash and Paul Murphy, RFUW President Gill Burns, Jason Leonard, Rugby World editor Paul Morgan and Danny Grainger representing QBE.

7. Girl Power: Thurrock Ladies RFC
The Thurrock T-Birds ladies rugby team from Thurrock RFC, Essex have been running for over 15 years and currently sit in Championship 2 South East at the top of the table with their sights set on promotion this year.
They have always received outstanding support from the club and this was demonstrated recently through a supporters lunch before a game at which 80 people dined and over 150 watched the match.
The T-Birds have a very young and talented team where 18 girls were selected to represent the county and a further 20 girls were selected for divisional trials. This is topped off by the inclusion of India Harvey in the England Under 18 team last year and Emily Scott in the current England Under 20 side.
Future aims are to gain promotion for the T-Birds into Championship 1 and attract even more higher levels players, to further develop our Under 15 girls and the numbers we have attending training by putting coaches into local schools.
Runners-up: Glossop, Hertfordshire RFU

Adult Tag Rugby
We have been approached by Tag Rugby from Ireland to run a tag rugby league over the summer. It is designed to involve as many different groups of people as possible, not just rugby clubs. This includes other sports teams: netball, football, hockey etc. AND businesses, pub teams, colleges, friends indeed any group of 7 or more people
There is potential to make money for the club but more importantly get people using the club over the closed season and make them aware we are here!
We will need people to help if we do take this on. The help might be just to put the word out or to referee or ensure the club is open etc.
If you think you might be interested please let me know, I am especially interested in anyone who thinks they could get a team together from outside the club
I am not looking for any commitment at this point just an indication
Cheers
See you all at the colts match on Sunday 2pm KO
Peter Taylor
Rob plays for the 1st team which is a great achivement for such a young front row player. Rob played for Thurrock youth teams from a very early age. A full on rugby man has often coached junior teams when asked and is a great roll model for all our young players
Well done Rob
Jack plays for the Colts and has played for Thurrock youth teams from under 12s. His enthusiasm and energy for the game is almost limitless, he trains at every oppotunity and always commits 100% in matches. He is an inspiration to all young players as to what can be achived
Well done Jack

There is a Hog roast, raffle and of course, an awful lot of great rugby
Matches start at 10:30 and continue for around 4 hours
This is really an unmissable event for people who enjoy sport and rugby in particular
Devastated mother Leesa who found out her two-year-old has a terminal illness has begun fundraising to give him a comfortable and fulfilled life.
Leesa and Allan Lynch were delivered the heartbreaking news in June that their son, Ellis, had Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a muscle wasting disease.
We hope this evening will raise some money to help the young lad as there will be buckets going round for your loose change (and notes)This promises to be a memorable evening and our aim is to get 500+ spectators
So dont go down the pub - come to the club
Emily Scott was flyhalf for Englands U20 campaign this season, scoring several tries and kicking numerous points from her exquisite boot! A local girl who learnt her trade against the boys at Stanford RFC , Emily is a massive Boost to the top ladies team in Essex!
India Harvey has been a significant talent on the girls circuit for years. A hard hitting centre with pace and power far beyond he years with excellent hands. Playing at centre for the England U18's she can also cover flyhalf!
Backs coach Jamie Daisley who also coaches Thurrocks 1st XV is ecstatic with the coup! said
"T-birds have been the top Ladies team in a 60 mile radius for years and now with England stars choosing us for the next step in their rugby development we shall push on in the quest for a premiership place against the country's Elite"
Tbirds first game is Sun 3rd Oct away at Wimbledon and first home game
is October 10th 3pm KO at Oakfield.
The opponents Westcliff narowly missed promotion last season and are expected to be at the top this season. If thurrock can win this match there is no reason they will not be promoted themselves. Having beaten Letchworth for the first time last week and the newly demoted Bury st Edmunds the week before all is set to make this a very exciting match indeed.
Don't miss it, bring the family, lets make the club a place for everyone
There will be 4 teams playing from 1pm and is set to be a great day
Make sure you do not miss it
Come along and support them and watch the start of Thurrock's most important season for 10 years
Remember there has been lots of work carried out on the clubhouse in the closed season lets make sure it stays looking as good as it is now
PS Unfortunately the 2nds match ah been cancelled but the 1st is definitley on
This season Bam will be runing the training sessions which start at 7:30pm
The sessions are open to all rugby players 17 and above on 1st September 2010
Some minor work will be completed Monday but the new chairs and tables are on their way from Italy not due to arrive until the end of August
Everyone who has seen the changes have been blown away by the phnominal improvement and agree it was the right decision to carry ouyt the work
All we have to do now is bring the rest of the club up to this very heigh standard
Well Done Bam and the others for the sterling work
There was good support from both visiting sides which helped make the evening a very enjoyable event
